   Parliament must ratify the treaty before it can take effect.

From Middle English ratifien and Old French ratifier, from Medieval Latin ratificare, 'to confirm or approve.' The Latin compound combines ratus, 'settled, valid, or reckoned,' with facere, 'to make': to ratify something is literally to make it valid.
