   any of several relatively straight muscles, usually named more fully for their location, such as the rectus abdominis or rectus femoris

   The surgeon separated the rectus from the surrounding tissue without cutting the muscle.

Borrowed from Latin rectus ("straight, upright"), short for musculus rectus ("straight muscle"). Anatomical names use rectus for muscles whose fibers or course are comparatively straight.
