   The stagecoach stopped at the inn to change horses before crossing the pass.

A compound of stage + coach. Long routes were divided into stages, with horses changed or passengers rested at designated stops. Coach ultimately comes from Hungarian kocsi, 'carriage from Kocs,' the town associated with an influential carriage design.
