   to make a shrill chirping, creaking, or grating sound by rubbing specialized body parts together

   Male crickets stridulate by rubbing parts of their forewings together.

A nineteenth-century back-formation from stridulation, through French from Latin stridulus, 'shrill or creaking,' itself related to stridere, 'to make a harsh sound.' The verb is used especially of insects and other animals with rubbing sound organs.
