Simplified etymology
Sumptuous comes from Latin sumptuosus, derived from sumptus, “expenditure.” It initially meant “costly” rather than “rich,” and by the mid-16th century had developed the sense “magnificent,” since costly things are often magnificent.
Etymology
From French somptueux, from Latin sumptuōsus, from sūmptus (“cost, charge, expense”), from sumō (“to take”) + -tus (noun formation suffix).
