   The swindler persuaded dozens of investors to pay for shares in a nonexistent company.

Borrowed in the late eighteenth century from German Schwindler ("cheat, impostor"), from schwindeln, which developed from "be dizzy" to "act deceitfully, cheat." Swindle was then formed in English from the borrowed noun.
