Simplified etymology

Syrup entered Middle English and ultimately comes from Arabic šarba, which also gave rise to sherbet and sorbet.

From Middle English sirup, through Old French sirop and Medieval Latin syrupus, from Arabic sharab, 'drink or beverage,' from shariba, 'to drink.' Sherbet, sorbet, and sharbat belong to the same word family.
