Simplified etymology

Tennis, recorded around 1400 as the name of the enclosed-court game now called real tennis, probably comes from Old French tenez, meaning “take!”, presumably called out by the server to an opponent. Since the 1870s the name has also referred to the outdoor game called lawn tennis.

From Middle English tennys, teneys, tenis, from Old French tenez (second-person plural imperative of tenir (“to hold”)).
