From Middle English thiself and thy-selfe, continuing Old English thines selfes, literally 'of thy own self.' It combines thy, the possessive form associated with singular thou, and self. As thou receded from standard everyday English, thyself survived chiefly in religious, historical, poetic, and deliberately archaic language.
