From Middle English tresorer, through Old French tresorer from tresor, 'treasure'. The family ultimately goes back through Latin thesaurus to Ancient Greek thesauros, 'storehouse or treasure'. A treasurer was literally the keeper of a treasury before the role broadened into financial administration.
