From utilitarian + -ism. Utilitarian was formed from utility + -arian; utility came through Old French utilite from Latin utilitas ("usefulness"), from utilis ("useful"), related to uti ("to use"). The philosophical noun names theories that evaluate actions chiefly by their consequences for overall welfare.
