Simplified etymology

Vespers entered English in late Middle English from Latin vesper, “evening.” Latin vesper comes from the same ancient root as west, the connection being the setting of the sun in the west.

From Middle English vespers and Old French vespres, from Ecclesiastical Latin vesperae, 'evening prayers,' based on Latin vesper, 'evening.' The plural form became the name of the church office and was later extended poetically to evening song.
