Borrowed from French vicomte, from Old French visconte, ultimately from Medieval Latin vicecomes, 'deputy count,' formed from vice- ('in place of') + comes ('count or companion'). It is a historical doublet of English viscount, but in English vicomte specifically preserves the French title.
