Simplified etymology

Vine is historically the same word as wine: both ultimately derive from Latin vinum, “wine.” It entered English in the Middle English period.

From Middle English vine, via Anglo-French vigne from Latin vīnea 'vine or vineyard', related to vīnum 'wine'. The older connection is to the grapevine, then broadened to climbing or trailing plants.
