Simplified etymology

Aficionado was borrowed in the early 19th century from Spanish, where it meant “amateur.” In English it first denoted an amateur bullfighter, then in the early 20th century a devotee of bullfighting, though its broader use for an ardent follower of any activity had already begun soon after its introduction.
