From Middle English almond or almaund and Old French almande or amande, from Vulgar Latin forms of Latin amygdala, itself from Greek amygdale, of uncertain origin. The initial al- was reinforced by association with words borrowed through Arabic, but almond is not derived from the Arabic definite article. It is a doublet of amygdala.
