   Scientists can produce tiny quantities of antimatter and confine charged antiparticles in electromagnetic traps.

Formed from anti- + matter. Arthur Schuster coined the word in 1898 in a speculative sense; physicists began using it in its modern sense after antiparticles were predicted and observed in the twentieth century.
