Simplified etymology

Graphite, recorded in the late 18th century, comes through German Graphit and ultimately from Greek graphein, “to write.” It belongs to the same root family as graphic and diagram.

Borrowed from German Graphit, coined in 1789 from Greek graphein ("to write") + the mineral suffix -ite. The name refers to graphite's long use as a writing material.
