Simplified etymology

Anvil comes from Old English anfilte, formed from the Germanic base represented by on and a verb meaning “beat.” Its original sense was therefore something on which objects are struck.

From Old English anfilte or onfilti, from a West Germanic compound associated with being beaten upon. Its form changed considerably in Middle English before settling as anvil.
