   His repeated asseveration of innocence did not persuade the investigators.

From Latin asseveratio, from asseverare ("to affirm earnestly"). That verb combines ad- (assimilated to as-) with severus ("serious, strict"), so an asseveration was literally a declaration made in a serious manner.
