Borrowed in the early nineteenth century from German Barutsche, from Italian baroccio or biroccio, ultimately from Late Latin birotus, 'two-wheeled,' formed from Latin bi-, 'two,' and rota, 'wheel.' The English spelling was reshaped as though the word were French, although the familiar barouche had four wheels.
