Etymology

From Middle English bedclothys, the plural of bedcloth, from Old English bedclāþ or beddclāþ ("coverlet, blanket, bedding"). It is transparently bed + clothes, but clothes here retains the older broad sense "cloth coverings" rather than garments worn on the body.
