Simplified etymology

Buttock is an Old English word related to butt in its anatomical sense of the bottom, which dates from medieval England. The deeper origin of butt is uncertain, although it has parallels in other Germanic languages.

From Middle English buttok, probably a diminutive formed from the ancestor of butt, 'end,' with the suffix -ock. The anatomical sense has been recorded since the Middle Ages; shipbuilders later applied the rounded-body comparison to a vessel's stern.
