Formed from Latin carbo, carbonis, 'coal,' + -ferous, 'bearing,' from ferre, 'to carry.' The adjective originally meant coal-bearing. Geologists William Conybeare and William Phillips established Carboniferous as the name of the coal-rich geological system in the early nineteenth century.
