Simplified etymology

Cartoon entered English from Italian in the late 17th century, originally denoting the thick paper used for a preliminary drawing. The sense “comic drawing” developed in the mid-19th century; carton is related through the same idea of thick paper or cardboard.

In British English first, from French carton (“sketch, cardboard, card”), from Italian cartone (“cardboard, carton, box”), augmentative of carta (“paper”), from Latin carta (“papyrus, paper”), from Ancient Greek χάρτης (khártēs) (see there for further etymology). Doublet of carton and card.
