   One species of charlock can crowd out a closely related mustard in a cultivated field.

From Middle English charlok and cherlok, from Old English cerlic or a related form; the deeper origin is uncertain. The name has long denoted the yellow-flowered wild mustard now classified as Rhamphospermum arvense (formerly Sinapis arvensis), a familiar weed of cereal crops.
