Through Middle English and Old French from Late Latin coadiutor, 'fellow helper,' formed from co- ('together') + adiutor ('helper'), from adiuvare, 'to help.' The general sense of a partner in work remains available, although the word is now especially familiar as an ecclesiastical title.
