Simplified etymology

Cocoa is recorded in English from the late 17th century. It is essentially the same word as cacao, and both forms ultimately come from Nahuatl, the language spoken by the Aztecs of Mexico.

From Spanish cacao, from Classical Nahuatl cacahuatl. The form cocoa came about by confusion with coco, popularized by Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language. Doublet of cacao.
