Borrowed from Latin comitia, the plural of comitium, 'assembly' or 'meeting place.' Comitium is traditionally analyzed from com-, 'together,' + a form of ire, 'to go': citizens going together to an assembly. English uses comitia for the Roman civic assembly itself.
