Cornea, recorded in late Middle English, is related to horn and to the skin condition corn through Latin cornu “horn.”

From Medieval Latin cornea tela, 'horny tissue,' from Latin corneus, 'hornlike,' and cornu, 'horn.' The eye's clear front covering was named for the firm, hornlike character formerly attributed to the tissue.
