Simplified etymology

Corrode comes from Latin rodere “to gnaw,” the same source reflected in rodent. Its meaning developed from the image of something being gradually eaten or worn away as if gnawed.

From Middle English corroden, through Old French corroder or directly from Latin corrodere 'to gnaw away,' formed from con- 'completely' + rodere 'to gnaw.' The figurative sense preserves the image of slow, destructive eating away.
