From Middle English countrevailen and Anglo-Norman countrevaloir, from contre-, 'against,' + valoir, 'to be worth,' ultimately Latin contra + valere, 'to be strong or be worth.' The older sense was to equal in value; the modern sense is to oppose or offset an effect.
