Simplified etymology

Dilapidation entered English in the late Middle English period from Late Latin dilapidationem, meaning “squandering” or “wastefulness.” It derives from Latin dilapidare, “scatter as if throwing stones, throw away, destroy,” formed from di- “asunder” and lapidare “throw stones,” from lapis “stone.” Its later association with ruined buildings reflects the destructive sense of the Latin verb.
