From Scots and Northern English dialect feck ('effect, result, vigor'), a shortened form of effect (from Latin effectus 'accomplishment, performance'), + the privative suffix -less. Original sense: 'having no effect or vigor.' Popularized in the 19th century by Scottish writers.
