   The court ordered the earlier gift to be brought into hotchpot before the estate was divided.

From Anglo-French and Old French hochepot, a mixed stew, from hocher ("to shake") + pot. The legal sense treats property as if it were mixed back into one common pot before equal division. Hotchpotch developed from the same word.
