Simplified etymology

Insomnia, recorded from the early 17th century, means “lack of sleep” and contains Latin somnus, meaning “sleep.” The same Latin word supplies the root of somnolent and the first element of somnambulist, whose second element comes from Latin ambulare, “to walk.”

Borrowed from Latin insomnia, 'sleeplessness,' formed from in-, 'not or without,' and somnus, 'sleep,' plus the noun suffix -ia.
