Borrowed from Latin iuger or iugerum, from iugum, 'yoke.' The area was traditionally associated with the amount a yoked team of oxen could plough in a day. English dictionaries head juger; jugerum is an alternative singular, and jugera is the Latin plural used by Adam Smith.
