Borrowed from Hindi and Urdu zamindari, from Persian zamindar, literally 'landholder' (zamin, 'land,' plus -dar, 'holder'), with the abstract suffix -i. The word came into English during British rule in India. Zemindary is a historical spelling variant used by Adam Smith.
