Simplified etymology

Lingo has been used in English since the mid-17th century and probably comes from the Portuguese form of Latin lingua, “tongue.” It is therefore related historically to language and linguist.

Probably from Lingua Franca or from Portuguese lingoa ('tongue, language'), ultimately from Latin lingua ('tongue, language').
