Simplified etymology

Lyceum takes its name from the Athenian garden where Aristotle taught. The garden was named after a nearby temple of Apollo Lyceus, meaning Apollo ‘the wolf-god’.

From Latin Lyceum and Greek Lykeion, the Athenian gymnasium beside which Aristotle taught. The proper name broadened to a place of instruction, then to lecture societies and halls in the United States and to secondary schools in several European systems.
