Simplified etymology

Mush, in the sense of a soft substance, is a variant of mash and was first recorded in the late 17th century for maize porridge. The command mush used to urge sled dogs forward has a separate probable origin as a reshaping of French marchez, “go,” or marchons, “let's go.”

Probably a variant of mash, from Old English masc ('mash, mixture used in brewing'). The sense 'sentimental drivel' is a 19th-century figurative extension.
