From Middle English nigromancye, through Old French and Medieval Latin, ultimately from Greek nekromanteia: nekros, "dead body," + manteia, "divination." Medieval spellings were influenced by Latin niger, "black," which helped associate the practice with black magic; the modern spelling restores the Greek necro-.
