Borrowed from French pachyderme, coined from Greek pakhys, 'thick,' + derma, 'skin.' Nineteenth-century zoology grouped several thick-skinned hoofed mammals as Pachydermata, but modern classification abandoned the order. Pachyderm survives especially as a literary word for elephant.
