Etymology

Ultimately from Greek pakhys ("thick") and derma, dermatos ("skin"), through New Latin Pachydermata and English -ous. It first meant belonging to the old zoological group of thick-skinned mammals, then developed literal and figurative senses of "thick-skinned."
