Simplified etymology

Pane originally meant a section or piece of something, such as part of a fence or a strip of cloth. It comes from Old French pan, ultimately from Latin pannus, “piece of cloth.” The sense “division of a window” is recorded from the mid-15th century.

From Middle English pane, from Old French pan ('part, section, or piece'), ultimately from Latin pannus ('cloth'). The word was applied to sections of fabric and buildings before becoming especially associated with separate sheets of window glass; computing later borrowed that divided-window sense.
