Etymology
From Medieval Latin paraphernalia bona, "goods beyond the dowry," based on Greek parapherna, from para- ("beside, beyond") + pherne ("dowry"). The legal plural broadened in English from a wife's separate belongings to miscellaneous possessions and then to equipment for an activity.
