A substantivized plural of regimental, originally meaning the things belonging to or identifying a regiment. Regiment came through French from Late Latin regimentum, 'rule or direction,' from Latin regere ('to rule, direct'); regimentals acquired its military-clothing sense in the eighteenth century.
