Simplified etymology

Sash in the sense of a band of fabric is of Arabic origin. From the late 16th to the early 18th century it referred to fine cloth wound around the head as a turban, before being applied to fabric worn over the shoulder or around the waist. The sash of sash window has a separate origin: it is an alteration of French chassis, “frame,” ultimately based on Latin capsa, “box.”

In the cloth sense, from Arabic shāsh ('muslin, turban cloth'). In the window sense, an alteration of French chassis ('frame'), reinterpreted as a singular.
