Simplified etymology

Revamp is recorded from the mid-19th century and grew from the older shoe-related verb vamp. By the late 16th century, replacing the vamp, or front upper part, of a boot or shoe could be called vamping it; this cobbling use also gave vamp the broader sense “improvise” and vamp up the sense “repair or improve.”

From re- ('again') + vamp ('the upper front part of a shoe'), from Anglo-Norman avantpie, from avant ('before') + pie ('foot'), from Latin pes ('foot'); to revamp originally meant to repair a shoe's vamp.
