Simplified etymology

Rink first referred in late medieval Scotland to the ground used for jousting. In the 18th century it was applied to a stretch of ice prepared for curling, and it remained chiefly Scottish until the late 19th century.

Borrowed from Scots rink or renk, 'course or battlefield,' through Old French reng from a Germanic word related to ring and rank. The sporting-surface sense developed in Scotland.
